Founded by the Sabini in 380 B.C. Treia rose at about 2 km from the present position where today rises the majestic sanctuary of SS. Crocifisso. It was first a roman colony, and then a Municipality since 109 B.C.
After numerous barbarian invasions, at the beginning of the 10th century, the survivors decided to take refuge in a safer place.
On the three hills not very far off they founded the present town, which was called Montecchio. In 1790 Pio VI gave it back the original name of Treia, and granting it the title of town.
Treia later passed under the control of the Varano, Sforza, Aragonesi, and at last under the papal governament again.
In 1430 rose the Academy of the Sollevati, with poetic and literary purposes; in 1778 some citizens changed it in Georgic Academy, in order to improve the agriculture without disregarding sciences, letters and arts.
The results obtained in the agricultural research and experimentation made it soon famous in all Europe.
The game of the ball with the armlet is a traditional sport which contributed in increasing the notoriety of Treia. This game lives again in the town with the “Disfida del Bracciale”, a folk festival which is celebrated on the first Sunday of August since 1978.
The city centre preserves the medieval aspect, with the boundary walls and its eight doors. The fortress of the Onglavina is, however, the most singular element.
There are different buildings overlooking the scenographic square of the Repubblica: the Renaissance Town Hall, the Georgic Academy, the church and the convent of S. Filippo; on the only open side there is a marble balcony from which you have a marvellous view as far as the sea.
In the territory of Treia there are many noble villas, some of which are very well kept, with parks and thickets of mediterranean vegetation.
